Karuna Special School is an educational institution owned and managed by Congregation of Theresian Carmelites sisters of St. Joseph province kakkanadu with the aim of proper educational support to the mentally challenged students in an around Nayarambalam panchayath which is considered as the most economically backward areas in vypin Island. We had started this institution in the year of 2001 august 25 th in a small house. In august 14th 2002, the Karuna Society for the differently abled was registered as charitable society under the Travancore-kochi: Literary , Scientific and Charitable Societies Registration Act of 1955, at district registrar’s office Ernakulam as Reg.No. ER 535/2002, (Karuna Special School and Rehabilitation Society). And we have accredited governmental tax exemption 12A and 80G.And then Special Scchool recognized by Kerala Government education department and Karuna vocational traing centre separately registered in 2021 ( reg no. according to the RPWD act by Kerala Government Social Justice department).
Presently the Karuna special school providing training for 200 children who are mildly,moderately, and severly affected by mental retardation. Among them 5 children are getting early intervention training at the Early Intervention centre, 56 children are getting special education in school, 134 students are getting training in the vocational training unit.
Special education is specially designed with instructions which meet the unique needs of an exceptional child with special materials teaching equipments and other facilities. In our school we have all the infra- structured facilities to train more than 200 mentally retarded children. Giving importance to each and every child individually the children broadly divided in to seventeen groups as classes.
The organization employs a dedicated staff of 15 special educators, 2 therapist , 2 psychologist and nonteaching staffs. These trained and highly qualified staff regularly keep evaluating and updating their teaching and training skills to be on par with new advances in the field of intervention and rehabilitation techniques of special children.
The school has private building It has got 10 class rooms for instructional purpose . All the classrooms are in good condition. It has 2 other rooms for co-curricular activities.The school has therapy rooms they are sensory integration room, speech therapy room and physio therapy room. The school has a separate room for Principal/teacher. The school is having a computer a computer aided learning lab. The school has pucca boundary wall . The school has have electric connection . The source of drinking water in the school is tap water and it is functional . The school has a playground. The school have ramp to access classrooms. The school is providing midday meal.
